You are five minutes from the customer. The company that gets the call is twenty minutes away. There is a reason for that, and most of it is inside your control.
I am not going to tell you that you have a visibility problem. Go find out.
Pick up your phone. Not your desktop, your phone, because that is what your customers use.
Search your service the way a homeowner would. pool service Sebastian FL or ac repair near me
Look at the map results. The three businesses Google shows before you scroll.
Count how many of those three are actually based in Sebastian.
Most owners in this market run that search and find companies from Vero Beach and Palm Bay sitting where they expected to be. Sometimes their own business is a few rows down. Sometimes it is not on the first screen at all.
That is the whole problem in one screenshot. Now here is what actually decides it.
Google publishes how local results are ranked. It comes down to three things, and Google names them plainly in its own Business Profile documentation.
How well a business profile matches what someone is searching for.
How far each business is from the customer who is searching.
How well known a business is, which Google ties to things like links and review count and rating.
Read the middle one again, because this is where most owners get it wrong. Distance is measured from the person searching, not from the middle of town. It is recalculated on every single search, and it moves as the customer moves.
So being based in Sebastian can help you on some Sebastian searches. It is a real advantage and it is worth having. What it is not is a guarantee. Proximity does not carry a profile that is half filled out, a business with four reviews, or a website that never names the towns it serves.
Here is the part that should bother you. Distance is the one factor you cannot change. Relevance and prominence are the two you can build. And for most Sebastian service businesses, those are exactly the two nobody has touched.
Your work is not what is being measured here. Google has no idea whether you are good at your trade. It measures what it can read, and right now the company from twenty minutes away is giving it more to read than you are.
Fixing that is not one project. It is three, and they build on each other. We call them the Three Foundations.
Go look at your own homepage right now and answer two questions. Does it say, in words, exactly which services you sell? Does it name the towns you actually work in?
A surprising number of Sebastian sites fail both. They have a logo, a photo of a truck, a phone number, and a line about family owned since whenever. That is a business card, not a website. Google reads text. If the text does not say pool cleaning, or AC repair, or pressure washing, and it does not say Sebastian, Micco, Roseland or Wabasso, then there is nothing to match a search against.
This is the cheapest gap on the list to close and it is usually the one sitting wide open.
Those three map results at the top of your search are not pulled from websites. They are pulled from Google Business Profiles. For a local service business, that profile is usually the single most important asset you own online, and it is free, and most owners set it up once in 2019 and never opened it again.
Complete profile. Correct primary category. Real photos of real work. Services listed out individually. A service area that reflects where your trucks actually go. Every one of those feeds the relevance side of the equation.
This one is specific to this market and it trips people up constantly.
ZIP code 32976 is a Sebastian ZIP. It also covers Micco and Barefoot Bay. Those communities are not inside Sebastian city limits. They are in Brevard County, on the other side of the county line from Sebastian, and they carry a Sebastian mailing address anyway.
Micco had 9,574 residents at the 2020 Census. That is a real block of households sitting immediately north of you, sharing your mailing address, in a different county.
If you built your service area around your mailing address instead of around the map, you may be leaving out several thousand people who think of themselves as your neighbors. Or you may be claiming a county you never actually work in, which is the opposite mistake and just as costly.
Either way it is worth ten minutes with the map to check. Set the service area to where your trucks genuinely go. Not wider, because padding it does not help you. Not narrower, because you are throwing away work you already drive to.
Prominence is the factor Google ties to review count and rating. That is not my opinion about reputation, it is Google describing its own ranking signal.
Which makes reviews an operations problem, not a marketing one. The businesses that accumulate them are not lucky. They ask, every time, at the moment the customer is happiest, which is the day the job is finished. The businesses that do not ask stay where they are, and no amount of website work makes up the gap.
Everything above is spent getting one call. What you do in the next ten minutes decides whether that call was worth anything.
A missed call during the workday is not a call that comes back later. The person calling has a problem right now and a list of other numbers. If yours rings out, the next one gets the job, and you paid for that lead in time and money without ever knowing it existed.
The fix is unglamorous and it works. Answer fast. Text back automatically when you cannot answer. Follow up on the ones who did not book the first time, on a schedule, not on whether you happen to remember.
It is also worth knowing who your market is. Here is what the Census says about this corner of Florida.
That is the composition of the market, nothing more. I am not going to tell you what it means about how anybody prefers to be contacted, because I do not have data on that and neither does anyone else selling you marketing. What I will say is that in a market this size, the same names come up over and over, and a business that answers its phone and follows through builds something a competitor cannot buy.
Sebastian is on the Florida coast and every business here plans around that. Major storms drive a spike in demand for roofing, tree work, fence repair, pressure washing and cleanup, and they also disrupt the roads you use to reach customers.
There is a recent local example worth remembering. In October 2024, rainfall from Hurricane Milton washed out an aging culvert under County Road 512 in Fellsmere and opened a hole in the road roughly 25 to 30 feet wide. The road closed from State Road 60 to about four miles north of the culvert and traffic was pushed onto Interstate 95. Repairs started December 19 and the road reopened on January 10, 2025, with two new 60 inch concrete pipes, a $1.65 million job funded by FEMA.
That is three months of altered routes through a corner of this county. Nobody plans for a specific culvert. But it is a reminder of the environment you operate in, and it points at something you can control.
When demand spikes, the businesses that catch it are the ones customers can already find. Visibility is built in the quiet months. You cannot start building it the week you need it.
If your profile is thin and your reviews are stale going into a season, that is the position you will be in when the phones start ringing across town.
For your Google Business Profile, what matters is your service area, and that should reflect where you actually drive. Barefoot Bay and Micco are in Brevard County even though they share the 32976 Sebastian ZIP, so if you only ever selected Indian River County you may have left them out without realizing it. Open your profile, look at the service area on the map, and make it match reality.
Because distance is only one of the three things Google weighs. A Vero Beach company with a complete profile, a lot of reviews and a site that names Sebastian can out rank a closer business that has none of those. You are being beaten on relevance and prominence, not on location.
You are not required to have one, but the two work together. Google looks at your wider web presence when it judges prominence, and a customer comparing you against two other companies is going to click through and look. A profile with nothing behind it asks the customer to take you on faith at the exact moment they are deciding.
There is no number, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. The useful way to think about it is relative. Run the search, look at the three businesses ranking above you, and look at their review counts and ratings. That is your gap. It is measurable and you can close it by asking every customer.
Yes. Google supports service area businesses, which is a profile where you hide the address and define the area you travel to instead. Plenty of trades run this way, and it is the correct setup if you work out of a truck or out of your home. Setting it up wrong, or leaving a home address visible when it should be hidden, causes more problems than the setup itself.
I run the searches your customers run, screenshot what comes back, and show you where you land against the specific companies ranking above you in Sebastian. Then I go through your Google Business Profile and your website and mark what is missing. You get the findings whether or not you ever hire me. No cost and no obligation.
You ran the search at the top of this page. If you did not like what came back, that is the thing worth fixing, and the first step is seeing the whole picture instead of one screenshot.

We'll show you exactly where you're losing leads and what it costs you every month.
🔒 No spam. No obligations. 100% free.
While you're running the business, your competitors are investing in systems that make their phones ring 24/7. Here's what's actually happening:
When a local customer searches for your service, your competitors appear first. You're invisible, even in your own backyard.
Traffic means nothing without leads. If your site doesn't capture visitors and turn them into phone calls, it's just an expensive brochure.
Random ad spend without a system is just money down the drain. You need a proven lead generation machine, not guesswork.
80% of sales happen after the 5th contact. If you're not following up with leads automatically, you're leaving serious money on the table.
Every problem above comes back to the same three things. We fix them in order, because each one makes the next one work.
A customer should know what you do, where you do it, why to trust you, and what to do next, before they scroll.
Your Google presence should back up what your website says and give a stranger a reason to pick you over the company listed above you.
When someone calls or fills out a form, there has to be a reliable next step, so the opportunity you paid for does not get forgotten.
