Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google Maps?

Here is what is actually wrong, and what to fix first

You type your own service and your own city into Google. Somebody else sits in the map pack at the top. You scroll past two companies you have never heard of, one of them two years old with nine reviews, and finally find yourself somewhere down the page.

I hear this every week from owners in Palm Bay, Melbourne, Sebastian and Vero Beach. Most of them assume Google made a mistake, or that the new company across town paid for the spot. Neither one is what happened.

Google is not ranking you on how good your work is. It ranks you on a short list of signals it can actually read, and most local businesses are missing three or four of them at the same time.

What Most Owners Try First and Why It Fails

Before we get to what works, here is where the money usually goes to die:

• Stuffing the business name with keywords. Bob's Plumbing becomes Bob's Plumbing Palm Bay Drain Cleaning and Water Heater Repair. It might bump you for a week. Then a competitor reports it, Google suspends the profile, and you spend a month getting it back. Google requires the name on the profile to match the name on your truck and your invoices.
• Buying a 300 listing citation package for 99 dollars. Consistency still matters. Volume stopped moving the needle years ago. Ten accurate listings beat 300 sloppy ones carrying three different phone numbers.
• Running Google Ads and waiting for the map to follow. Ads and map ranking are separate systems. You can spend 2,000 dollars a month on ads and your map position will not move one spot.
• Rebuilding the website first. This is the most common mistake I see. A new site is the slowest lever you own. It matters eventually. It is almost never the right opening move.

Not Every Fix Moves at the Same Speed

Part of the frustration is that owners do the slow things first and then decide local search does not work. Here is roughly how long each fix takes to show up.

Do them in that order and you get proof inside a month. Do them backwards and you spend six thousand dollars before you learn anything.

The Three Things Google Is Actually Measuring

The question I get most is simple. Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps? The answer is almost always that one of these three is weak, and nobody ever checked which one.

1. Distance is measured from your pin, not your service area

This one surprises people. If you hide your address because you work out of a truck, Google still calculates distance from that hidden address. Your service area list tells Google where you work. Your pin decides where you rank.

Adding ten more towns does not put you in those ten towns. An owner in south Palm Bay will fight to rank in Melbourne no matter how long that list gets. You do not fix that in settings. You get around it with reviews and with real pages written for each town you serve.

2. Reviews are the scoreboard

Count the reviews on whoever is beating you, then count yours. That is usually the whole explanation. Here is a real Palm Bay map pack I pulled this month.

If you have six reviews, you are not losing to a better company. You are losing to a company that asked. Reviews that name the service and the town do double work, because a customer who writes "they replaced our unit in Melbourne and showed up on time" just handed Google a relevance signal you cannot buy anywhere.

3. Profile completeness decides what you are eligible for

Most profiles I open are missing the same fields:

• No opening date, so the years in business line never appears while your competitor shows 22 years
• One category instead of a primary plus two supporting ones
• No services listed, so half of what you actually sell is invisible to Google
• No photos added in the last six months
• No posts, ever

None of that is hard. All of it takes an afternoon. Owners skip it because nothing in the dashboard tells you it is missing.
